Look for choices with more than one benefit

Some changes help in several directions at once. A shorter commute might reduce transport costs, return time and make a lower-stress job workable. Paying off a small debt might improve cash flow and reduce mental load.

Ask three questions

  • What financial effect does this have?
  • What time, energy or risk effect does it have?
  • Does it make another useful choice easier?

These choices are often more resilient than a change that depends on sacrifice in every other part of life.

Tip: Do not force every benefit into dollars. Put the non-financial benefits beside the scenario instead.
